My goal when selecting the figures is to reframe them as existing artwork within a book and beyond serving the purpose of illustrating a lesson.

What I look for in a figure are indications of advancement of knowledge, scale (from molecule to subjects seen with the naked eye), and humanism.

Science needs to be objective so that we have reasonable degree of certainty that these lessons can aleivate our lives. When possible I include photos of people that not clinical in nature.
