Night Trees
2020 - 2024
My collection of trees illuminated by street lamps explores the isolated appearance of trees when the night sky acts as a black backdrop.
What caught my eye was the bright glow of the leaves that were heavily constrasted with the night sky.
The street light created a blooming effect around the edges of the leaves while the remaining leaves glowed.
LEDs within the lamps were so bright that trees appeared similarly to a sunny day but the blue sky is absent. It contributes to the feels that something feels off.
In some of my photos in this series, the trees were casting shade but in the middle of the night which is not expected when the sun is not out.
One of the few things I could control in each shot is my position relative to the fixed tree and light source.
I chose to avoid a direct line of sight to the street lamp to draw less attention to it, although there are a few exceptions in this collection.
When I took shots angled upwards towards the sky, the leaves seemed to suspected in space since the branches did not reflect light as well.
Like my other photo series, I am collecting photos of scenes (illuminated trees in this case) that I repeatedly encounter in the everyday.
