Keeping It Together
March 2025
This piece involving sutured mandarins was an accepted art submission for the 2025 Albany Medical Ethics Conference.
During my medical training, I was practicing my suturing technique for my surgery rotation.
While it is not a one-to-one comparison with human tissue, the mandarin has different textures and varying resistance to the driving needle.
I thought of reassembling the outer rind and juicy segments of a peeled mandarin with a surgical needle and thread.
Although I was able to put the mandarin back together, a gap between its original and final forms remained.
